FAQ
Questions we hear most
Short answers first, in plain words. If yours is not here, send it our way.
Do I really need noise cancelling?
Not always. It is wonderful on trains, planes and in noisy offices. If you mostly listen at home or while running outdoors, you can skip it and spend the money on comfort, battery or fit. See our noise cancelling guide.
Earbuds or over-ear headphones?
Earbuds fit in a pocket and suit workouts, cooking and quick trips. Over-ear headphones are usually more comfortable for long sessions and tend to have longer battery life.
How long do wireless headphones last?
Most batteries stay healthy for two to four years of daily use. Earbuds tend to wear out sooner than over-ear headphones because their batteries are tiny.
Is Bluetooth sound good enough?
For music, podcasts and films, yes. Modern Bluetooth sounds very good to most people. Critical listening and music production are better served by a cable. See home and studio.
What does IPX4 mean?
It means the headphones can handle splashes of water from any direction, such as sweat or light rain. It does not mean they are safe to swim or shower in.
Can I use them for phone calls?
Yes, but quality varies. Look for reviews that test voice pickup, especially if you take calls outdoors or in windy places.
Are expensive headphones worth it?
Sometimes. More money usually buys better noise cancelling, clearer microphones, a sturdier build and longer software support. If you do not need those, a mid-priced pair is often plenty. See sport and budget.
Will they work with both iPhone and Android?
Almost all Bluetooth headphones work with both. Some extras, such as quick pairing or special sound modes, work best with the maker's own phones.
How do I clean my headphones?
Wipe them with a soft, slightly damp cloth. Clean earbud tips with a dry cotton bud and a little mild soap on the silicone, and let everything dry fully.
Do you take money from headphone makers?
No. We are not affiliated with any brand, and brands do not pay for placement in our picks. Read more about us.
